Edward Scissorhands has come to Hull New Theatre in a spectacular and beautiful performance that is hands down the best production I’ve seen all year.
And that is saying something because, as most people who know me will already be aware, I love the theatre and am there with my friend pretty much every month.
So far we have seen an eclectic mix of shows at both Hull New Theatre and Hull Truck Theatre, including Pretty Woman the musical, Heathers, Mama Afrika, Carmen and probably more, but I think we both agreed that this performance of Edward Scissorhands was easily one of our favorites.
If I had to sum up how I felt about the performance in three words, they would have to be ‘enchanting’, ‘emotional’ and ‘mesmerising’. I will be honest in that I had no idea what to expect before I saw it- I know the story of Edward Scissorhands, the classic Tim Burton film, and am also familiar with the ballet works of Matthew Bourne, but the show completely exceeded my expectations and more.

It follows the story of Edward, a young boy created by a mad inventor who dies of a heart attack before he has the chance to finish creating his hands, leaving the boy with pairs of scissors for hands. Left alone, Edward stumbles into a nearby village to try and find acceptance despite his differences.
The dancing was, put simply, incredible and mesmerising. The movement of each and every dancer and the stunning music fitted together like a perfect puzzle, made even more dramatic and impressive by the gorgeous visual and sound effects that completed the beauty of the production.
That is without mentioning the magical backdrop of the set- it was so beautifully created and featured magical houses, hedge sculptures and a beautiful music box, a charming and stunning visual to add to the elegance of the overall performance.
Local star Liam Mower played the role of Edward in a sympathetic and enchanting way. There was emotion, there were moments of laughter, and an all round love for this character as he battles his way to win the hearts of those around him. In fact all the cast were brilliant in their respective roles, putting on a truly captivating and enjoyable show.
If you’re looking for something that captures your heart, makes you laugh and engages you completely, this is the one for you. Even if you haven’t seen a ballet before, this show is perfect because it isn’t like a conventional ballet, but more modern, dramatic and fast-moving, and all round a stunning performance.
If you ever get a chance to see this show, definitely do it! It is guaranteed to steal the hearts of all ages and experiences of theatre-goers and I personally absolutely loved it.
